Local woman to compete on YouTube singing challenge

A Forsyth County native will be featured on a new YouTube series starting Monday.

Riley Biederer will be a contestant on Best.Cover.Ever, a new YouTube-exclusive talent competition hosted by rapper Ludacris premiering on the website on Monday. The competition will have contestants facing off with the winner getting to sing with a famous artist.

"It was amazing," Biederer said. "I didn't ever expect to be considered or even seen. I didn't know how it was going to work, but it was a great experience. I'm so excited to see it and everyone's reaction."

Biederer was selected after she sent in a video of her performance of Katy Perry's 'Firework.' She said she couldn't say much about the competition but that it would be "really exciting"

"It was very crazy," she said. "I will say that it happened very fast— the way that things worked out, all the traveling— half the time I had no idea what was happening. There were a lot of things that were surprises."

This isn't the first time the Forsyth County native has faced off against other singers.

In 2015, she competed in NBC's "The Voice," where her team's coach was Grammy-winner Pharrell Williams and she competed for one round on Gwen Stefani's team.

"[Best.Cover.Ever] kind of reminded me of my time on 'The Voice,'" she said. "It was a little bit nostalgic in a way, just the whole aspect and setup of it."

The competition being YouTube-exclusive — where artists like Justin Bieber have risen to fame for their videos — was interesting to Biederer.

"I just think it's a really cool opportunity for YouTube cover artists because that's such a big market right now," she said. "YouTube is a great way to get yourself out there. That's why I was drawn to it."

Biederer will be on the second episode of the series, which will premier with the first episode on Monday.

The series will also feature artists Katy Perry, Keith Urban, the Backstreet Boys and others.

Biederer said that beyond the contest, she is refining her musical style and writing lots of new songs. She said she has been spending a lot of time in Los Angeles to surround herself with pop songwriters and musicians.

"Right now, I've been going back and forth between L.A. and Atlanta a bunch the last few months," she said. "I'm pretty much in writing mode and writing tons and tons of music and trying to figure out exactly what direction I want to go in as an artist."

Biederer was flying back to Atlanta the day after speaking with Forsyth County News and said she had received a lot of support from her hometown.

'It's awesome being from Forsyth; obviously, I've been there pretty much all of life," Biederer said. "They were great when I was on 'The Voice,' and this one has been more of a kept secret … when it comes out, I'm sure everyone will be supportive as usual, and it's good to rep the hometown."
